SIMON BALESTRAZZI, MAX EASTLEY, ALESSANDRO OLLA & Z’EV

( featuring MARCO CAPPELLI )

“FLOATING SIGNAL”

The Floating Signal project was created as a documentation of sorts for Signal, Advanced Music and Collateral Languages, a multimedia festival which takes place in Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy) since 2006.

Floating Signal, which features musicians involved in the festival, was recorded between September and December 2007 in three separate sessions. The first, recorded at Ticonzero Studio, consisted of three long improvisational performances by Z'EV on his peculiar set of unamplified percussion and Alessandro Olla and Simon Balestrazzi on laptop and amplified objects. The second was a brief free improv recording by Alessandro and Simon with special guest guitarist Marco Cappelli which took place on Casa Angioni stage, during the rearshall, short before Marco live appearance at Signal. Finally a third last session took place in the crypt of the convent of San Domenico with Max Eastley on his self-built arc. Max both played improvising in real-time with Alessandro and Simon and on unedited selections from the previous sessions. These overdubs were done in real-time in single takes in an effort to capture the spontaneity of the performances. Several months later the present material was culled from about four hours worth of recordings and subsequently edited, with a few processing and juxtapositions, till the current form.

Alessandro Olla      laptop & amplified objects

Prolific and multi-faceted artist, Alessandro Olla has invested a major part of his creative effort in transgressing musical formalities and academicism. His skills forged in classical studies that included piano, composition and electronics, he was soon tempted by the possibilities of the freest slopes of sonic creation, entering into the turbulent but exciting fields of improvisation, experimentation and risk-taking electronics.
